Without the sweeping away of debris within the cell, cells could become choked with trash and malfunction or die. In recent years, some scientists have begun to suspect that faulty autophagy mechanisms contribute to the development of a range of diseases, including diabetes, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s and cancer. The slowing of autophagy as we reach middle age is also believed to play a role in aging.

Spending an extra hour sitting a day (for 13, rather than 12, hours) is linked to a 50 per cent greater risk of being disabled. And this was regardless of whether the participants also did moderate exercise, according to the U.S. study published in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health. The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress — a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. These actions, they say, are so simple that everyone should aim to do them every day. As I considered the millions of books that have been written on promoting and improving one’s mental health and emotional health, I found this study very fascinating. Because what they discovered was not incredible deep hidden secrets of the universe, but rather very simple ordinary things, things that I think were more naturally evident in my life when I was a child.
